Hotel Stratford

We were pleased with the location, a short walk from the BART station. It is located , in my opinion, in the hub. From this location, we could easily get around either by walking or the various city transits. The room was small but clean. We came to San Francisco to tour the city not spend too much time in the room. We found it was a very good value and would recommend it.

I needed a place to crash during a conference taking place in other Union Square hotels, so this was the perfect location. It's only two doors down from the square and a block and a half from the Powell Street BART/Muni station, so it's also very easy to get to on public transportation. While the Hotel Stratford does indeed have small rooms and a slow elevator, it was perfectly clean, quiet, and had a comfortable bed. From the minute I stepped into the entrance, I felt like I was in a small row-house hotel in London (I've stayed at many). The front desk staff were always friendly and helpful. I didn't get a chance to try the breakfast, but given the outrageous prices at restaurants in the area, it's worth it just to have something free to start your day. My only complaint is about the amenities. They provided big bottles of shampoo and shower gel and a hearty bar of soap, but no conditioner or lotion. I am glad I remembered to bring my own lotion, but I had to work hard to comb my hair after using the shampoo. The shower also had quite weak water pressure.

Hotel Stratford was the perfect hotel for our trip to SF. The location cannot be beat!! It is located in Union Square and sits on Powell street. There is a cable car running on Powell street and the stop to get on is just feet from the front door of the hotel. Also extremely close is the Powell street BART stop. We were able to take the BART from the airport to the front door of the hotel in about 30 minutes!! The area is also overflowing with shops and restaurants (both chains and boutiques). The staff at the hotel were so friendly and helpful. We were immediately given a map (without asking) and shown were we were and what we could do in the surrounding area. Each time we arrived or departed the hotel we were greeted with a smile. The cleaning staff did an excellent job of cleaning the room daily and made the room very comfortable. The rooms are on the "smaller" size but this is SF so you should expect that. They are very comfortable and accommodated myself, my SO and two average-sized suitcase. There was plenty of room in the bathroom and we were very comfortable. There are NOT air conditioners in the room but there are ceiling fans. We are from Chicago so the noise that other reviews mention was nonexistent for us. Compared to Chicago, the streets were silent. I would HIGHLY recommend Hotel Stratford to any couple wanting a fun, friendly and comfortable hotel in SF!!

Great location and price. Room was a bit small and shower was lacking water pressure. Free breakfast, though minimal, was a nice bonus.

Location, location, location. This is a great spot. I was able to book a few months in advance, because rates have gone up... Rooms are small, definitely hear some street and hallway noise, but a great place to crash. Free basic breakfast is a plus.

The info read on it's description made it seem appeling, but once your there is a whole different story. Room was way too small, although it was clean there was a humid smell through out the room. The sink wasn't even in the bathroom but across the bed. Not a good look. The hotel is located in a busy commercial area w high transit. Noise at all hours of the night, and valet is the only option, but you must give 45 min notice to get your car. Overall this hotel will NOT be an option for my next booking

perfect location. heater did not work properly, most of the nights we did not have heat, we addressed it with staff, worked one night and the rest of the time it was really cold. housekeeping must have forgotten and left our used towel by our bed. I will not stay here again and will not recommend to friends.

There was no air condtitioning at the hotel. My room faced the west and the sunlight in the after-noon coming through the window heated up the room pretty good. Close the drapes help some, but not that much. The ceiling fan made it just bearable otherwise I would have been sweating. The room was small, but clean. I would recommend the room to a friend if they were looking to save money and if their trip were not in the summer months.

This room was perfectly fine to stay in, especially for a short stay. It's just a bit small and some might find it weird that the sink was outside of the restroom, closer to the bed. I think the pictures on this site represent the room well. And as everyone else has already said, the location is simply the best. Literally right next to Union Square and the Powell-Market cable car turntable. And there's also free wifi. The main thing that was lacking was parking. I know they have a parking structure for hotel guests somewhere, but we couldn't find it and the hotel reception wasn't very helpful in telling us where it was. There was no space to park in front of the hotel to allow the valet to take it, so we ended up parking at the Ellis O'Farrell garage, which actually turned out to be better for us. It was literally like a street away and although it says it's $32 per day, we only paid $19 for 1 day and 2 extra hours. It might have been some sort of mistake, but we definitely weren't about to complain! All in all, good hotel with decent prices (cheapest I could find at the time) at the perfect location. Would come back again.

Upon arrival the lady at the frot desk was nice and accommodating. We were early and she held our bags in a sketchy closet in the back by the bathroom. Our room smelled horrible like a gym locker room. We had to go to Walgreens across the street and buy deodorizing spray to make it barable. After a long day of traveling from Chicago and site seeing we went to take showers at 10:30 at night (since we had an early morning departure) and guess what? NO HOT WATER! I immediately called the desk and told them I let it run almost 10 minutes and it was still freezing. The guy said there wasn't anything he could do since the staff was gone and wouldn't be back eat enough to fix it before we left. He offered us another room to shower in- that's it. There were 4 of us, and I explained how it was an BIG inconvenience for us to lug all Of our toiletries across the hall and back, especially since it was late, and we were tired, but he said that's all he could do. We asked him about discounting out room and he said no. I asked for another room and he said no they didn't have any of the room type that we booked available. I asked about splitting up Ito 2 rooms and was told no since we had one room/family combo room. It was very frustrating. For the money we spent I feel like hot water should have been included in the price.
